M_Period_Web.png

The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District serves about 7,000 people living in and around the towns of Vinton, Garrison, and Shellsburg and employs approximately 250 total staff members from administration, instructors and support staff and approximately 1,675 students. Centered 30 miles northwest of Cedar Rapids and southeast of Waterloo, VSCSD offers elementary schools in both the Vinton and Shellsburg communities with separate buildings for the middle and high schools in Vinton.

Vinton-Shellsburg Community Schools offer a wide variety of coursework and extracurricular activities to allow students to challenge themselves and find their passion. These efforts result in a well-rounded, organized program of studies emphasizing the mastery of basic skills. No matter what you choose to study or participate in, you’re always a Viking when you are at VSCSD!

What The Client Wanted

The public sees the work of schools from the outside, while the great things happening for students are on the inside. Our job was to turn the inside out so everyone in the district could see the commitment and enthusiasm teachers and staff have for their students.

Elements of Our Strategy

  • Redesigned website with intuitive navigation

  • A streamlined social media portal teachers use to share what’s going on in their classrooms

  • Continuous streams of communication through newspapers, emails, and notices

  • A 90-second video introduction to the Vinton-Shellsburg School District

VIDEO

Video conveys emotion and information using the media most popular with students and parents with school-age children. Using dynamic motion during video capture and editing, the two-minute VSCSD video showcases the experience of students and teachers from Pre-Kindergarten to high school. The goal was to showcase that Vinton-Shellsburg teachers, administrators, and staff are devoted to being difference-makers for their students.

WEB DESIGN

Websites for complex organizations like PK-12 schools can, in time, morph into a massive amount of poorly arranged sources of information. As we designed the site we remained vigilant for “insider” information the parents of new or prospective students wouldn’t understand. Unveiled for the 2021-2022 school year, the site is designed to provide an excellent experience for students, parents, staff, and the community.

SOCIAL MEDIA

We gave social media a prominent and constructive role by building a portal for teachers and staff that freed them from concerns about clarity, spelling, and grammar. We found that the quality and quantity of posts grew along with trust in our review and editing process. By designing the portal for those who don’t frequently use social media, we improved outreach by a wider variety of teachers and staff.

COMMUNICATIONS

Your school’s brand isn’t what you say it is. It is the quick and subconscious reaction patrons have when they encounter the images, language, video, and other communications shared with them. Their reaction is shaped not only by the content of the information they consume but also by communication style.

Our goal for every Vinton-Shellsburg communication is to deliver a consistently positive experience for the consumer that is accurate, timely,

honest, and focused on serving students and the entire community.
